The Green below Fontenelle is Wyoming's quiet tailwater. It does not get written about the way the Bighorn or the Green down in Utah's Flaming Gorge stretch does, and the practical result is that you can fish good water on a summer weekend without seeing another angler. That is worth a great deal, and it is the main reason this trip exists. Below the dam the river runs cold and even, with long gravel runs and undercut banks that hold better fish than the water looks like it should. We wade a couple of access points over four hours and fish nymph rigs through the runs, switching to dries if the baetis or the pale morning duns come off. In high summer, hoppers along the banks are worth the walk, because the browns here sit tight against the grass and will move a long way for a big terrestrial. Fish are browns and rainbows, mostly fourteen to eighteen inches, with better ones holding in the deeper corners. The population is not as dense as the Bighorn, so this is a day of hunting good water rather than working through numbers. Anglers who like solitude and are not counting fish tend to enjoy it more than anglers who are. A half-day is the right length here. The wading is straightforward, the banks are easy to walk, and four focused hours covers the productive water without turning it into a march. It suits all levels, and it is a good option for someone travelling with a non-angling partner who does not want to lose a whole day. Species: brown and rainbow trout. Season: April through October; tailwater flows keep it fishable through the summer when freestones get warm. Meeting point: the Fontenelle Dam access below the reservoir, 8am for the morning slot or 1pm for the afternoon. Experience level: all levels, including beginners.

Full refund if you cancel more than 7 days out. Inside 7 days, we can move you to another date if we have it, otherwise the deposit is non-refundable. If I cancel for weather, unsafe flows, or smoke, you get everything back, and I will tell you honestly the night before if the river is not worth your money.

Wind was howling and he still got me into fish along the banks. Knows the water properly.

Quiet, pretty stretch of river and a relaxed four hours. Fewer fish than I hoped but a good morning.
