Five Days in Patagonia

About this trip

Northern Patagonia in the Argentine summer is the trip most anglers put off for a decade and then wish they had done sooner. The season runs opposite to ours, November through April, so it fills the hole in the calendar when everything at home is frozen. Based out of Junín de los Andes in Neuquén province, we fish a rotation of freestone rivers, spring creeks and lakes across five guided days. The water is varied enough that the week never repeats itself. The Chimehuín is the famous one, a proper freestone with a reputation built on very large browns. There are smaller spring creeks where the fishing is technical and sight-based, and lake mouths where the wind and the structure combine into something that feels more like hunting than fishing. Each day is guided and each day is chosen based on conditions rather than a fixed itinerary, which is the whole advantage of a week over a day trip. Fish are wild browns and rainbows, both descended from stockings a century old and long since naturalized. The average is good and the ceiling is high. This is genuinely a place where a twenty-five inch brown is a realistic outcome of a week rather than a story. Dry fly fishing with large attractors and terrestrials is the signature style, and the trout eat them with a confidence that spoiled anglers find unsettling. The week is five guided fishing days with six nights of lodging, all meals, and ground transport to and from the water. International flights to Argentina are not included and you book those yourself. Bring a passport with real validity on it, and expect wind, because Patagonia is famous for it and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Species: wild brown and rainbow trout. Season: November through April, Southern Hemisphere summer; December through March is prime. Meeting point: we arrange transfer from Chapelco Airport (CPC) on arrival day. Experience level: intermediate to advanced. You should be able to handle wind and throw a big dry accurately at thirty to fifty feet.
